What to expect

After the convenient hotel pickup in an air-conditioned coach, sink into a comfortable seat for the journey up the mountain. Make a stop at the Kula Lodge Marketplace where you can experience the art and culinary talents of Maui and Hawaii’s renowned artists and craftsmen.

After a stop at the Haleakala Park Visitor Center at about 7,000 feet (2,134m), make the final, winding, push towards the volcano’s magnificent summit. The crater overlook is just below the summit at 9,740 feet (2,969m), and there’s a good chance you’ll be one of the only people there. Gaze upon the colorful crater with its smooth, lunar cinder cones, and peer across the orange horizon to the peaks of the Big Island in the distance. After staying to watch the stars twinkle high above the volcano, you will begin your descent the mountain with the evening concluding with a convenient drop-off right back at your hotel.

not worth the money or time I wish we knew more what to expect along the way. The first driver never spoke to us so we had no idea what was going on. For us, it was a very long and boring ride both on the way as well as on the way home. Thenview at the top cleared quite well while we were there so that was nice and we got some pretty pictures. I would never spend $400 + for that again, i recommend going by yourself and reserving park passes well in advance.

Totes worth the long drive! Spectacular trip for National Park fans. Our tour guide, Mitchell, provided incredible insights into the history of Maui along the way from a Lahainan resident who has seen and experienced much since the August 2023 tragedy Take it from an amateur geologist: Mitchell and sunset cannot be beat. Native Hawaiian music even provided down the hill which lulled all 15 of us to sleep on the curvy road back. Breathtaking.

Amazing sunrise at the crater We had a great sunrise tour with an amazing tour director, Preston. Preston was very informative and provided a laid back environment but still gave a lot of history and Hawaii tid bits. It is very cold and you are outside for a good hour and a half so bring hats , gloves, warm coat, and warm socks. You will think this is overkill when you are packing for Hawaii but trust me , you will be thankful when you are there.
